To fully enjoy your doing basement fishing, you need essential appliances such as a TV or a computer. If you have a subscription to streaming apps on your phone or smart TV, you will need the same WIFI strength you get from when you are upstairs in the main house. Sometimes WIFI signal does not cut too deep within the walls and ceilings, so it is hard to get reliable reception.
There are several ways for you to get a strong WIFI signal in your basement. Here are eight ways to get a stronger WIFI signal down to your basement:
- Move the WIFI router to a central location
- Adjust router antenna positioning
- Reduce signal Interference
- Disconnect devices that are not in use
- Upgrade router equipment
- Build a wireless enhancer
- Get an access point/ mesh network
- Get a second router
Being able to enjoy streaming your favorite TV shows on Netflix in HD is not possible with a weak WIFI signal. The quality of the picture will auto-adjust based on the signal strength. Watching a 320p on a 65-inch 4K Ultra HD TV is not fun. It may be possible to listen to audio streaming platforms with weak WIFI signals, but it might lag as well. You will not be able to enjoy any internet-related activities, not even browsing with your phone.
Online games cannot be played seamlessly with a weak WIFI signal. It will be difficult to enjoy anything at all without high-speed internet. Your living room might have fast WIFI, but you will probably need an excellent WIFI signal while doing basement fishing as well. The reason for getting a man cave is to enjoy what you love doing in an enclosed space.
If there is no signal at all and you do not get WIFI down in your basement, it is going to be a problem. Almost everything needs WIFI nowadays, even a doorbell. Good thing there are more than enough ways to improve the WIFI signal in your basement, so you don’t have to worry.
MOVE WIFI ROUTER TO A CENTRAL LOCATION
The initial location of your router may have been chosen because of the length of the cable. Before getting internet service, you will have to think where you will place the router. If you already have internet service, don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world. If you put the router in your basement, chances are, you will get better signal distribution.
However, if it is a two-story house, the second floor might not get good coverage. I’m sure your kids will be disappointed if they don’t get a WIFI signal. You do not want to deal with that. It is better if everyone in the house can enjoy the same amount of signal. If the cable is too short for moving around the house, you can call your internet service provider (ISP) to help fix that problem by extending the wires they initially set up.
Walls and ceilings can block the WIFI signal. You should move the router to a more open space. Look at the floor plan and look for the perfect spot where everyone can get the same amount of signal. WIFI signals can travel through walls. However, there are certain materials the signal finds hard to penetrate, such as metal and concrete. A solid slab of concrete will be delicate for the WIFI signal to pass through.
If you plan on moving the router down in your basement, make sure you do not place the router near the exterior foundation. The wireless signal distributes signals in every direction, setting the router next to a wall will waste the capacity for the router to distribute the signal properly.
Helpful tip: If your home does not have a second floor, the best spot would be in the basement and away from any walls and obstructions. If the house happens to have a second floor, you can still place the router in the basement, but you will need a WIFI repeater on the first floor so WIFI can reach the top level.
ADJUST ROUTER ANTENNA POSITIONING
Some routers have omnidirectional antennas, meaning that the antenna sends out a signal in every direction. Sometimes this is not the case. Frequently, routers do not send signals below the antenna. If you want the internet for your basement, you can try pointing one of the antennas downward to the basement.
Make sure you follow the first step and place the router in a central position away from any thick walls to get the most signal. Adjust the antennas of the router and point to an area you want to get a better signal. If this does not help, go through the list and try some of the other methods.
REDUCE SIGNAL INTERFERENCE
There may be other appliances in your home that interfere with the WIFI signal. Keep your wireless router away from these appliances, especially in small spaces. Some of these interferences are cordless phones, game controllers, and microwaves. Anything with some kind of motor emits the WIFI signal because they generate an inductive flux that is similar to the frequencies from a WIFI signal. The rates can have unfortunate effects on the WIFI signal.
Helpful tip: A microwave is the router’s nemesis. The worst place to place a router is anywhere near a microwave. Do not make this mistake. Wireless phones are next on the list of your router’s enemies. Weirdly, companies that usually provide internet service are landline phone companies.
DISCONNECT DEVICES THAT ARE NOT IN USE
Sometimes the devices that you do not use are still connected to the internet. It means those devices are again using the bandwidth, so it might be the reason why the signal is weak in distant places such as the basement. The range of frequencies have limits within a given band. It is mainly used in transmitting a signal. Too many devices connected to the internet are sharing the same bandwidth, which can slow the internet down.
Make sure you disconnect your laptop, iPad, or any other device that you do not use frequently. Laptops disconnect when the computer is shut down. You don’t usually turn off your iPad when not in use, so make sure you disconnect it from the WIFI.
Helpful tip: Go into your router settings on a computer to find out what devices are connected to your router. You can easily disconnect any unknown devices.
UPGRADE ROUTER EQUIPMENT
Your wireless router may not have enough power to transmit signals further. You can solve this by upgrading your old router. There are a lot of high-speed smart routers on the market nowadays. Here is a list of some of the newest WIFI routers that can transmit signals further:
- Google WIFI system
(Price: $99) (3 pack for $250)
The Google WIFI system is a new type of router that offers seamless WIFI with better coverage throughout your home. It helps get a better signal because of the elimination of dead zones and buffering. You can select multiple WIFI channels to get the fastest band for your devices. You can use the app to set it up. With the app, you can prioritize connected devices and pause the WIFI for your kid’s devices. Usually, this product comes in the three-pack. One single device can cover up to 1,500 sq. Feet. Buying all three can be enough to cover your whole house, including your man cave.
- TP-Link AC1200 Smart WIFI Router
The AC1200 has two bands so you can connect more devices simultaneously without compromising the speed. The four external antennas can send WIFI throughout the household. This router can quickly eliminate dead zones for consistent and stable internet connection. With the app, you can easily set up the WIFI and tethering.
- NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart WIFI ROUTER
This router can cover up to 1,500 Sq. Feet wireless coverage with speeds up to 1300 Mbps. This device can connect up to 25 devices. You can stream videos, play games, surf the internet reliably even with a lot of devices connected. This device has advanced cyber threat protection. This router can deliver fast and reliable WIFI to every corner of your home, including your attic and basement.
BUILD A WIRELESS ENHANCER
Building your own DIY wireless enhancer is the most inexpensive way to extend the WIFI signal in your home. You can do this by placing reflective material on the antennas of your router. You can use an empty soda can or aluminum foil. Your router will not look very pleasing with this method; however, it can help boost the WIFI signal.
I didn’t think this method will work, so I gave it a try. It does not significantly boost the WIFI signal, but if all you need is just a little push, it can probably work for you. The idea is the surface of the can will reflect the signal to wherever the antennas are pointed.
All you need to do is cut the end of the soda can. Then, cut up a hole on the side of the can so you can insert the antenna. Once you have done that, you now have your very own WIFI enhancer. This method can get you at least one more bar on your signal.
GET AN ACCESS POINT/ MESH NETWORK
An access point is a WIFI extender. You can set up one of these extenders in different parts of your home wirelessly. You can usually plug it in the wall and set it up with the primary router. It is probably the easiest method to get a WIFI signal throughout your home.
One of the downsides of using a WIFI extender is if your house is a dead zone. The extender will only repeat the same original signal the router transmits. Make sure you have placed the primary router in the most optimal spot in the house.
Ideally, the WIFI repeater should be the same brand as your existing router. You can even plug in the WIFI extender in the basement for faster internet in your man cave. With new technology, most of the more modern access points will be compatible with your old router. Here are some of the products you can try:
- OPTICOVER WIFI Extender Internet Signal Booster
A WIFI extender is an excellent solution for transmitting WIFI in dead zones. The OptiCover is compatible with most existing routers, so you can quickly expand your signal. It can deliver AC dual-band up to 300 Mbps. This product promises no more dead zones with advanced dead zone elimination technology to ensure fast streaming 4K HD in any room of the house, including your basement.
- TP-Link N300 WIFI Range Extender
The N300 by TP-link is compatible with any router and access point. It features a smart indicator that lights up when you are in a spot with an excellent signal. It is compatible with Alexa so you can control the device with the use of voice commands.
GET A SECOND ROUTER
One of the best solutions for better WIFI coverage is to get a secondary router for your basement. To do this, you will need a long CAT5E ethernet cable that can reach the basement form the position of the primary router. Make sure you preconfigure the new router with the same IP address as the first router for it to work. Connect the ethernet cable to the WAN or Internet port of the second router, and you’re good to go.
With this method, you are sure that no one in the house can hog your bandwidth. You have a whole network for yourself to stream your favorite music and TV shows with no interruptions.
Helpful tip: Make sure you reduce the signal strength or range of the second router. Being in the same range, the two networks you have might clash. Newer devices tend to connect to the stronger signal it recognizes.
